Great Britain’s fencing hope for the London 2012 Olympics has revealed that he uses some of his poker skills when competing.
Jamie Kenber – who revealed that he has been interesting in fencing since he was eight-years-old – says that there are direct comparisons between fencing and poker tactics and that he is set to use them at this summer’s Olympics.
The Oxford graduate said: “If I can't get enough students then I might play a little bit of cards. I've had some wins, but it's not a reliable source of income unless you have a lot of time to commit.”
“I'm a decent hobbyist, but I've made a little bit of money from it. How much I play depends on how much time I've got.”
He then referred to the specific comparisons between the two, something which many online poker UK experts might need some clarification on.
Kenber explained: “There are comparisons. In fencing someone might show you something and you don't know whether they're actually going to go through with it or if it's just an early bluff. That happens in poker as well.”
“And if you think people are doing things for the wrong reasons you can end up losing. It's no coincidence that I enjoy both of them.”
After finishing his discussion about beginners texas holdem poker, Kenber went on to say that he thinks fencing is one of the more unknown sports that the British public will enjoy this summer.
He continued: “I think people will be impressed with what they see from the sport. It's fun to watch. It takes a fair bit of commitment to learn the rules and tactics, but it's well worth it.”
Perhaps Kenber will represent Britain superbly well, maybe even bringing home a medal. All while enjoying a bit of poker in his spare time!
